Laugh at High Gas Prices With a 235-MPG VW

With gas prices going through the roof and regulators requiring cars to be ever more miserly, Volkswagen is bringing new meaning to the term “fuel efficiency” with a bullet-shaped microcar that gets a stunning 282 235 mpg.

Volkswagen’s had its super-thrifty One-Liter Car concept vehicle — so named because that’s how much fuel it needs to go 100 kilometers — stashed away for six years. The body’s made of carbon fiber to minimize weight (the entire car weighs just 660 pounds) and company execs didn’t expect the material to become cheap enough to produce the car until 2012.

But VW’s decided to build the car two years ahead of schedule.

According to Britain’s Car magazine, VW has approved a plan to build a limited number of One-Liters in 2010. They’ll probably be built in the company’s prototype shop, which has the capacity to build as many as 1,000 per year. That’s not a lot, but it’s enough to help VW get a lot of attention while showing how much light weight and an efficient engine can achieve.

VW unveiled the slick two-seater concept six years ago at a stockholder’s meeting in Hamburg. To prove it was a real car, Chairman Ferdinand Piech personally drove it from Wolfsburg to Hamburg. At the time, he said the car could see production when the cost of its carbon monocoque dropped from 35,000 Euros (about $55,000) to 5,000 Euros (about $8,000) — something he figured would happen in 2012. With carbon fiber being used in everything from airliners to laptops these days, VW’s apparently decided the cost is competitive enough to build at least a few hundred One-Liters.

VW’s engineers — who spent three years developing the car — made extensive use of magnesium, titanium and aluminum to bring it in at less than one-third the weight of a Toyota Echo. According to Canadian Driver, the front suspension assembly weighs just 18 pounds. The six-speed transmission features a magnesium case, titanium bolts and hollow gears; it weighs a tad more than 50 pounds. The 16-inch wheels are carbon fiber. The magnesium steering wheel weighs a little more than a pound. How much of the concept car’s exotic hardware makes it to the production model remains to be seen.

Low weight only gets you so far in the quest for ultimate fuel economy; aerodynamics plays a big role. The One-Liter is long and low, coming in at 11.4 feet long, 4.1 feet wide and 3.3 feet tall. It features an aircraft-like canopy, flat wheel covers and a belly pan to smooth the airflow under the car. The engine cooling vents open only when needed, and video cameras take the place of mirrors. The passenger sits behind the driver to keep the car narrow. The car has a coefficient of drag of 0.16; the average car comes in around 0.30 and the Honda Insight had a Cd of 0.25.

As for the engine, the concept had a one-cylinder diesel engine producing 8.5 horsepower and 13.5 foot-pounds of torque. Car says the production model will use a two-cylinder turbodiesel for a little more oomph. Doubling the number of cylinders is sure to cut fuel economy, so VW may install a diesel-hybrid drivetrain. The engine turns off at stop lights to save fuel, then automatically restarts when the driver depresses the accelerator pedal.

(Update: The car reportedly has anti-lock brakes, stability control and airbags. According to Canadian Driver, “Volkswagen says the One-Liter Car is as safe as a GT sports car registered for racing. With the aid of computer crash simulations, the car was designed with built-in crash tubes, pressure sensors for airbag control and front crumple zones.”)

Mazda planning RX-7 revival by 2012

Mazda is expected to launch its next-generation of the much-loved turbocharged RX-7 performance car by 2012, according to a report published by RoadandTrack magazine.

The RX-7 rebirth is a must for Mazda, with the affordable sports car market from Asia set to make a long awaited return with cars like the Nissan 200SX, Hyundai Genesis Coupe and ‘Toyobaru’ Coupe.

The current RX-7 is still a modern and highly sought-after sports car despite its age, and as the rendering above demonstrates, the new model will draw its inspiration from Mazda concepts such as the Kabura and Furai.

The new model is expected to be powered by the new 16X rotary engine, an evolution of the current Renesis 13B engine found in the RX-8.

In its naturally-aspirated guise the 16X rotary engine is expected to produce around 150-190kW with improved low-end torque.

However sources indicate Mazda is still experimenting with forced-induction – determined to meet emissions regulations which faulted the RX-8’s turbocharged ambitions.

New fortwo review

smartManiacs are very pleased to have been loaned a new 451 fortwo.

Read on to see the latest smart and what we think of the new model.

You could certainly be forgiven for not realising that the car is an all new model. Subtle differences in the styling, to the bonnet line, headlamps, rear quarterlights and door lines don't give many clues to the transformation. The new car is around 20cm longer, and feels much more roomy in the cabin, at 6'1" I had no problem with head or leg room.

The cabin looks more upmarket, there are still the options for the dash pods to be added to base models. The stereo is more integrated than the old car, although clearly labelled buttons are present, the volume control is a rather fiddly knob on the front of the unit. The overall build quality of the car is much improved.

In our tests the base model Pure returned around 55mpg, being a non-turbo version I felt that the little car had lost some of it's fun and soul, gearchange seems a little ponderous, and the tone from the 1.0 litre engine, although quieter, is not as pleasing as the 700cc engine. On the open road the new car feels more settled thanks to the longer and wider wheelbase, however it is still affected quite badly by crosswind and the slow gearbox makes it a little jerky round town with anything less than complete concentration.

The familiar seats have been replaced by a new and more supportive seat. I was very impressed with the comfort of these over long distances, as I found the old seat somewhat bench-like and unsupportive. The tailgate also houses a storage box ast standard, however there are optional uses for this, such as a picnic set.

Toyota IQ and Urban Cruiser

cars announced by Toyota should be a truly important addition to the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show. On display will be the IQ urban car and the brand new model, the Urban Cruiser. The IQ was first seen in concept form in Frankfurt in September 2007 and time-wise in terms of development it has beaten the Volskwagen UP!, which was displayed only a few stands away at the same show.

Three passenger spaces have been confirmed, despite the length being less than three metres. Also confirmed is the shape of the prototype, with large wheels and a smoother drive. Even though the glimpses we have had of the IQ seem to be similar in concept to the Smart For Two, Toyota insists that the technology, the security and the design research represent an automotive revolution. As of yet, the specification details and performance stats, as well as the pricing have not been released, but we do know that the car will not be available on the market before the end of 2008. As for the engine, on
the Italian site we recently covered a possible collaboration with Yamaha.

world premiere at the show will be the Urban Cruiser, a compact SUV designed for city use with fuel consumption and emissions reduced to a minimum. For the time being, we have little information and only one photo, but in Geneva we will discover more on this new car, that at first glance reminds us of the design of a few models sold in the States such as the Xb by Toyota’s Scion brand.

Always concerned about the environment, Toyota will put forward the brand new hybrid prototype ‘Plug-In’. At Geneva Toyota plans to display the 1/X Plug-In Hybrid concept with Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) technology, as well as the personal mobility concept i-Real.

Tesla founder and CEO, Elon Musk, recently announced that the Model S electric car will be on display in New York City on April 30th and May 1st at the Plaza Hotel, 5th Avenue at Central Park South, New York, NY 10019. "Tesla sales representatives will be at The Plaza Hotel to answer questions and take reservations. Eventually we will have a Model S in all of our showrooms and at major auto shows. In the upcoming months, we'll bring the Model S to Chicago, Seattle, Miami and Washington as we prepare to open regional sales and service centers in those locations." The Model S will also appear on TV soon...
Elon Mush will be a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman on April 29th, and he'll be bringing the Model S electric sedan with him. Here's the TV Guide listing.

This is an excellent opportunity to introduce electric cars to even more people (the buzz has been really good on the internet, but you'd be surprised at how many people "out there" who still don't know that these kinds of electric cars are possible).

The 2008 Proton Persona shares only its name with the previous Proton Persona model, a car that was sold in Australia between 1995 and 2005. The new model however is based on the Proton designed and developed GEN.2 platform and uses an improved version of Proton's own Campro 1.6 litre twin cam engine.
New Proton Persona delivers fresh styling, improved build quality and better performance in an economical and low cost package.
Brunei, 8 April– PROTON revved up its export optimisation plans with the launch of Persona in Brunei. The sedan was launched by the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Brunei Darussalam, Dato Ku’ Jaafar Ku Shaari.

The PROTON Persona, which has been driving sales in the domestic market with over 35,000 bookings since its launch on 16 July 2007, was first exported to Singapore in October last year and is expected to be a key factor in PROTON’s export optimisation drive.

Brunei has been a good market for PROTON and the company sees it as a potentially strong growth market and is confident of Persona’s performance in the country.

Renault Megane Coupe Concept stuns Geneva

It might seem just a concept and for now that’s exactely what it is but Renault Megane Coupe will be a production model. The concept shows us the overall lines of the new model and the new range actually. The actual production model will debut at the Paris Auto Show and will most probabily replace the current model next year.
What stikes me is the resemblance with the new Laguna. The Gulwing doors are there just to impress and to give the car a futuristic feel. The interior is also from the future and nowone can imagine it in a production model(at least not for the next 10 years anyway)
The back reminds us that the current Megane hatchback isn’t dead yet but it shows its age.

Even though the actual car will be more down to Earth, this concept is a great feat of engineering and the guys over at Renault proved that even if they’re French, that doesn’t mean that they have to make nice and cudly cars.Good for them and I hope they keep it up

The Fiat 500: the first Fiat car to be made by Chrysler? The Fiat 500: the first Fiat car to be made by Chrysler?

One of the first Fiats to make it to the United States via Chrysler will be the diminutive Fiat 500, introduced in 2007, with an exterior design meant to recall the original Fiat 500, the ubiquitous Italian car of the 1950s and 1960s (a Fiat 500 was one of the tire sellers in Cars). Power comes via several SOHC in-line four cylinder engines, displacing just 1.2 liters with horsepower ranging from 68 to 74 hp; but for the United States, the base powerplant is expected to be a 100-horsepower 1.4 liter engine, with the optional Abarth turbo version going up to 175 hp (similar in output to the 2.2 Turbo II sold by Chrysler in the 1980s). Like the New Beetle, the 500 is based on a more conventional design — that of the Fiat Panda, which has completely different interior and exterior styling, but essentially the same chassis and components.

Roberto Giolito, head of Fiat-brand styling and designer of the popular 500, says Chrysler will build four versions of the mini-car beginning in 2011. The lineup will include the standard 500 hatchback, a convertible, a station wagon and a sporty “tuner” hatch based on the Abarth version of the 500. According to Fiat, an all-wheel-drive CUV is a possibility. All the versions will be sold as Fiats. Production may be at a plant in the U.S. or at Chrysler’s Toluca, Mexico assembly facility.

The tiny Fiat 500 coupe was crowned “best compact car” by Japanese Internet users in 2008, against the equally small Toyota IQ (also coming to America) and Peugeot 308. In Japan, though, people tend to accept small cars more readily; micro cars – powered by engines of just 600 cubic-centimeters (.6 liters) – have been street legal for years.

Fiat had considered building the 500 for the American market at its Case New Holland tractor factories, before tying in with Chrysler. Its goal was to repeat the success of BMW's Mini, which proved that, while Americans generally don't care for small cars, sometimes they make an exception. Automotive history is littered with nameplates that tried to establish a footing in America with small cars and achieved only marginal success, until they faded away: Crosley, Nash Metropolitan, Studebaker Lark, and Geo.

The World's Ugliest Cars

A recent survey selects the worst designed cars of all time. The top pick? The AMC Pacer
By Chris Palmeri

Car geeks are generally an outspoken group. But they really put the pedal to the metal when Hagerty Insurance, a specialist in collector cars, surveyed its policyholders for their picks of the worst car designs of all time.

Here's what one connoisseur had to say the about the top pick, American Motors' Pacer: "0 to 60 in four-and-a-half hours. AMC's only conceivable excuse for this stylistic horror would be if their design crew was tripping on massive quantities of acid...and even then...it wouldn't be a good excuse."

McKeel Hagerty, CEO of the company, ordered up the survey after noticing that several of what he calls "nerd cars" were increasing in value. He says he was surprised when the Pacer-a notorious dud from the days of disco-topped the list. Hagerty bought himself a dark green 1976 Pacer three years ago for $2,300. "If anyone thinks I'm picking on Pacer owners, guess what-I am one," he says.

Here are the top 10 worst design picks, with comments, from the nearly 2,500 Hagerty customers who participated.

Tesladownunders Car Theft Protection

Above shows setup and testing. I wonder if I should have taught my kids CPR? In the 4th photo, note the elevated Tesla coil with the rotating connection above the ladder about 11 ft (3.3 m) off the ground. In the last 3 photos, my chain mail butchers glove is grounded both to the plate I am standing on (wet to improve conductivity), and to an earthed point nearby.
Next just add the Driza-Bone stockman's riding coat, a hired dreadlocks wig, army surplus boots and you have the effect at the top. I am also wearing the chain mail glove and some cycling gloves over that so the sparks can jump onto my outstretched hand.

My wooden counterweight is on fire here at the top of the coil. It's quite safe to be in the car although my son was apprehensive. This was a Hyundai Getz hire car (as I don't own one) and it still works. I did get extra insurance "in case". Of course a Tesla Roadster from Tesla Motors would be the ideal car for this or a De Lorean.

There is a rod projecting out the top of the TC and the sparks will come from the tip of the rod. If that rod is bent so that it nearly touches the ground it will spark to ground. If you rotate the rod around the car it will form sparks as it traces out a circle. If you take a long exposure then the sparks will all be on one photo giving a ring of sparks.

Again, lots of comments and links on hundreds of blogs and sites including Digg, humorous caption comments on Autoblog, Russian (with 377 comments), and Japanese sites. In total 200,000 website hits and perhaps 1,000,000 people have seen this on other sites

TOO FAST,TOO CORIOUS CARS IN SECOND LIFE PART 2

There are more unofficial cars in Second Life than official ones - this is the case not only with the automobile sector but with most other product categories.

Eversheds jump on the bandwagon. UK-based legal firm Eversheds issued a report today titled ‘Retailers need to be aware of fakes in the virtual world’.

Nothing strange about that. Plenty of companies are applying their expertise into virtual worlds now. However, having read the report it highlights a distinct lack of understanding of the dynamics surrounding Second Life (in particular).

The report highlights the unlawful trademark infringement taking place with unofficial brand representation….

‘Many brand owners such as BMW and Jean-Paul Gautier have decided to have a brand presence in Second Life.’

Incorrect. Jean-Paul Gautier ran a tactical campaign (Fleur du Male) in Second Life
on third-party land. This was a one-off event which ended many months ago. Also, there are currently no retailers in Second Life promoting JPG products via the search functionality, nor there is no official JPG presence in SL.

‘if a replica product underperforms and is badly designed, this can be damaging to that brand’s reputation’

I’m not quite sure what the author means by ‘underperforms’. Virtual world products do not work in the same way as real world products. Cars do not stall. Shirts to not shrink. Food does not go stale. Also, given the highly competitive nature, not to mention fanatical attention to detail of the vast majority of designers in SL, the last thing the product will be is badly designed.

‘Even with the support of Linden Labs, it may transpire that the name and address of the real person behind the virtual identity could be fictitious’

There goes the ’s’ again.

All in all, a very quick and dirty attempt to position themselves as an authority on virtual worlds. Now sure, companies issue these types of report in order to generate potential new business but the bottomline here is accuracy and a rounded opinion. This report misses the mark unfortunately.

The bigger picture here is that companies have to implement a planned and measured strategy for virtual brand management because collaboration with SL designers replicating real-world brands can potentially yield significant benefits for brand owners. There are several stages to consider:

Top 10 most expensive cars in the world

We are bringing you the list of 10 most expensive cars in the world. At the top of the list is of course the legendary Bugatti Veyron, most expensive, most powerful, and fastest production car in the world.
The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is the most powerful, most expensive, and fastest street-legal production car in the world, with a proven top speed of over 400 km/h (407 km/h or 253 mph). It reached full production in September 2005. The car is built by Volkswagen AG subsidiary Bugatti Automobiles SAS and is sold under the legendary Bugatti marque. It is named after racing driver Pierre Veyron, who won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1939 while racing for the original Bugatti firm. The Veyron features a W16 engine—16 cylinders in 4 banks of 4 cylinders
According to Volkswagen, the final production Veyron engine produces between 1020 and 1040 metric hp (1006 to 1026 SAE net hp), so the car will be advertised as producing "1001 horsepower" in both the US and European markets. This easily makes it the most powerful production road-car engine in history.

Audi-metroproject-quattro

Audi officially revealed the new Audi Metroproject Quattro, a design study for the forthcoming Audi A1 as the German auto maker ventures into the sub-compact segment.

The Audi Metroproject Quattro is powered 1.4 liter TFSI engine that produces a total of 150 horsepower mated with a S-tronic Direct Shift Gearbox. Working as a hybrid, a 41 horsepower electric motor sits in the back allowing for a fuel-economy range of 48 mpg. This could mean that the A1 will most likely come with a hybrid variant in its lineup.

The Audi A1 is expected to come in four different variants including a three-door hatchback, a five-door and a coupe and convertible. Power is expected to come from a 1.2 liter engine that will produce up to 170 horsepower. Production on the Audi A1 is scheduled for 2009. lexus-is-f-launches-in-japan

Lexus has released six new images of the the IS-F luxury sedan, which was first shown in January at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The car is expected to arrive in showrooms in the coming months.

The all-new 2008 IS-F will target the BMW M3 and Audi RS4, delivering more than 400 horsepower and 350 ft.-lbs. of torque from a 5.0-liter V8 engine. It will eventually be offered as a two-door coupe, as well.

Much of the development of the new IS-F took place at Fuji Speedway and the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Japan. The IS-F is based on the rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS, which is equipped with a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension. The IS-F engine is mated to the world’s first eight-speed “direct sport-shift” transmission. A new torque-converter lock-up control was developed that allows for a direct, crisp gear change through the constant lock-up of the torque converter in second through eighth gears.

In Drive mode, the IS-F transmission performs smoothly, and the torque converter allows for quick 0-60 acceleration in less than 4.9 seconds. The transmission also features a manual mode operated via a pair of paddles. Downshifts are accompanied by automated throttle blips to match engine RPM to vehicle speed. Heavy-duty Brembo brakes with 14.2-inch discs and six-piston calipers ensure all the power is kept under control. The IS-F features custom-designed 19-inch forged alloy wheels as standard

Preview: Mazda Taiki

Mazda has released images of its Taiki Concept ahead of the car’s Tokyo Motor Show debut later this month. Fourth in the Nagare design series — which includes the Mazda Nagare, Mazda Ryuga and Mazda Hakaze — the Taiki furthers the flowing design theme of the previous show cars.

The front-engine rear-drive Taiki is powered by Mazda’s next-generation RENESIS rotary engine, although Mazda failed to release any further information about the drivetrain. Mazda says the design of the two-seat Taiki “was inspired by the image of a pair of Hagoromo – the flowing robes that enable a celestial maiden to fly in Japanese legend – floating down from the sky.”

According to Mazda, the theme of the Tokyo Motor Show will be “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom- Mazda’s showroom today and in the future.” The Taiki will share the Tokyo stage with the Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid and the all-new Mazda Atenza — the Mazda6 here in the U.S.

German tuners have just unveiled their BRABUS D3 S POWER XTRA upgrade for the new 2008 Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI. In early December Porsche will launch a special edition Boxster that has been inspired by the 1960s Porsche Type 718 RS 60 Spyder. Limited to only 1,960 models worldwide the biggest change is the modified exhaust system that consists of a sports exhaust combined with a dual tailpipe that increased engine output to 303 bhp.

Offered in a GT silver metallic grey, the car comes accentuated with a red roof and natural leather interior in Carrera red, though the pictures make it look like a magenta leaning more towards hot pink than red. Thankfully, the car is also offered in dark grey leather with a black roof. The car sits on 19-inch wheel, which spacer plates have moved outwards, and its front end is a standard feature from Porsche’s SportDesign Package. Completing the sporty orientation is the Porsche Active Suspension Management system.

Further features include a windscreen in a black finish, with the center console, headrests and rollbars are all finished in the same GT Silver metallic finish as the car body.
Also finished in GT Silver are the instrument dials that don’t have the usual hood over the cluster but the large central rmp and 2 side gauges continue the sporty, racing style. Each model comes with door trim strips made of stainless steel and embossed with the “RS 60 Spyder” model designation.
Worldwide market launch will be March 2008 with a base price of 53,500 Euro (561,371 ZAR) in Germany and a retail price of 63,873 Euro (671,215 ZAR) (which includes 19% VAT and country specific requirements.)

Gumpert looking to build a new model: More luxury, less power

Winding Road just relayed some info from the newest issue of Autocar, regarding supercar maker, Gumpert. Apparently, the firm is working on a new model said to be "less powerful, more relaxed, and less track-oriented." The brief mention is in the March 21 issue of Autocar, and quotes Apollo builder Francois Sittler. No details about whether the car will be based on the current Apollo or not. We're sure we'll get more details before the car shows up three years from now.

For those who might not recognize the name, Roland Gumpert was a big part of Audi's Motorsport department in the '70s and '80s. That was the period during which Audi managed to snag four World Rally Championships with its awesome Quattros. The company that bears his name, Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur GmbH, uses Audi mechanicals to power race-type supercars developed with help from the Audi supertuner MTM's Roland Mayer. The griffin-badged Gumpert Apollo started production in late 2005 and was joined by the "Sport" edition at Geneva. Both feature Audi's 4.2-liter V8 but with twin-turbos boosting horsepower to around 800. Price on the Sport starts around $400,000.

Suzuki Splash – Light Car Segment Heating Up

The Suzuki Swift has been an enormous success for the Japanese brand, capturing the same audience that Hyundai managed in the 90s with the Hyundai Excel, the Suzuki Swift has successfully brought Suzuki back into the Australian market.

But how will Suzuki follow up the swift? With the SX4 making its way in June, Suzuki’s new model is expected to sit below the Swift. Currently dubbed as the Suzuki Splash, the new model is based on the swift platform.

Recently we reported that holden is considering a light-car, the new Daewoo Matiz. If Holden’s plans go through the Splash will go head to head with the Korean.
More details will be released at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. However from what do know, the European made splash will have six airbags and an electronic stability program (as standard).

Suzuki plans to offer three different engines, two petrol and one diesel – no automatic will be offered, all variants will be driven via a 5-speed manual. While we can’t confirm if all engines will make their way to Australia, there is no reason to think otherwise.

Lamborghini Gallardo Convertible – New Model

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Or you can also get free email updates over at the top right hand side. Thanks for visiting!

It’s not all doom and gloom in the car industry – as evidenced by the fact that Lamborghini has produced a convertible version of one of the prettiest cars ever made – the Gallardo. Smaller in proportion (and arguably much better looking for it) than the Murcielago, the Gallardo is nonetheless a true supercar. That makes the convertible version that little more special!

Of course, whilst it might seem illogical to launch a convertible in winter, it becomes a little more understandable when you factor in the consideration that most Lamborghinis are actually sold in California. The Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder (to provide the full name) was unveiled at the LA Auto Show.

The bodywork weighs 20kg less and the engine has been given an extra 40bhp over the standard tin top version. Resultantly, performance is maintained at a whopping 0-60 of four seconds and a blast all the way up to 201mph should you so desire.

Perhaps more interesting is the apparent improvement on the eco-front. Lamborghini has managed to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by a whopping 18 percent. Of course, don’t go kidding yourself that a 5.2 litre V10 is now green…

Prices start at £150,000 for the basic model, whilst if you want to spec it up you could add more to that (probably by a significant number). For obvious reasons, the UK launch has been put off until spring – I don’t really fancy going around in a convertible in -3 – but then again it is a Lambo.

Whilst it is rather breathtaking to look at, for some reason I’m still more of a fan of the hard top version. The normal 560 just seems to have more appealing lines. Maybe it’s just me? Let me know what you think.

In addition to this, the large tyres (245/40 - R20 at the front and 275/35 - R20 at the rear) and the powerful, muscular rear wings accentuate the imp

With its sporty appearance and sumptuous level of appointments, the immediately available Sport Edition is a new highlight among the Coupés and Cabriolets of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class. 18-inch light-alloy wheels in an exclusive design, AMG styling features in the exterior and bi-xenon headlamps as standard give this special model a particularly distinctive appearance. The sporty, exclusive atmosphere of the interior is especially characterised by the grippy AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel, aluminium-look sports pedals and special velour floor mats.

The letter combination CLK has denoted excitement and driving pleasure for many years. The new “Sport Edition” special model now makes the Coupés and Cabriolets of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class even more desirable. Both externally and in the interior, the Sport Edition further upgrades the CLK models and makes them even more attractive and dynamic.

The exciting design of the CLK-Class is accentuated by muscular AMG styling features for an even more dynamic appearance. These include a front apron with more pronounced contours, as well as the rear apron and side skirts which typify AMG models. Large, 18-inch light-alloy wheels in a new, six twin-spoke design (front 225/40 R 18, rear 255/35 R18) further enhance the sporty appearance and contribute to driving pleasure. The same applies to the perforated front brake discs. The brake callipers of Sport Edition models bear the lettering “Mercedes-Benz”.

Alfa 8C Competizione

The '8c Competizione' concept car, designed and produced by the Alfa Romeo Style Centre, stands as an icon of the brand, its very name evocative of Alfa's great motorsports tradition. This is borne out by the code '8c' used to identify cars (racing and on-road) of the Thirties and Forties equipped with the revolutionary eight-cylinder engine produced by the famous designer Vittorio Jano. The second term 'Competizione' is intended as a homage to the 6C 2500 Competizione, a sports coupé driven in 1950 by the team of Fangio - Zanardi in the famous Mille Miglia race.

So '8c Competizione' is not an invented name, but a clear reference to Alfa's racing history. The Alfa Romeo legend was in any case born out of victories won on circuits throughout the world.

Alfa's many successes make a long and fascinating story on their own, a story of men and their competitive passion, engines and cutting-edge engineering.

The protagonists of the inestimable human and technological heritage that is responsible for today's beautiful cars, full of character and, above all, capable of combining the beauty of the styling with the pleasure of driving them.

Let us admire then the captivating, original lines of this prevalently carbon fibre 2-seater, with its aggressive proportions: 1900 mm wide, 4278 mm long and 1250 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2595 mm.

The body is given extra dynamism by the horizontal furrow cut into the side above the front wheelarch
In addition to this, the large tyres (245/40 - R20 at the front and 275/35 - R20 at the rear) and the powerful, muscular rear wings accentuate the impression the model gives of a strong, forceful personality. This does not detract in any way from the elegance of the lines that run smoothly from front to back, to the light clusters set into the front bumper. A stylistic balance that has its maximum expression in the daring design of the rear window and the whole rear mudguard.

The front elements have been repositioned as they were on the most important Alfa racing cars of the past: the 'whiskers' and shield are aligned at the same height - a decision of historical and evolutionary significance. But a rapid glance will reveal that the styling of the whole exterior is full of classical references, an ideal opportunity for a modern interpretation of traditional Alfa styling cues. A quick glance tells you everything. For example, the front end recalls the former 33 Coupé Stradale. While the rear sports the characteristic round light clusters of the Giulia TZ.

Seat’s stunning new Ibiza breaks cover

Today the covers come off the most important new model in Spanish car maker SEAT’s recent history with the unveiling of the all-new Ibiza five-door supermini. The newcomer’s dramatic debut, at the firm’s Martorell HQ near Barcelona, marks the start of a major product offensive from the ambitious Spanish brand which will, over the coming months, also see the debut of further Ibiza variants, as well as striking new saloon and estate contenders in the upper medium segment.

All-new from the wheels up, and designed to reinforce SEAT’s position as a leader in the supermini sector, the bigger, better new Ibiza five-door has a range of ‘big car’ features to match its sharp styling.

The work of renowned ex-Lamborghini stylist Luc Donckerwolke, the new car offers a variety of class-leading options such as the availability of a new seven-speed DSG automatic/sequential manual gearbox, Hill Hold Assist, front fog lights with side illumination (cornering) function and combined AUX-IN/USB connectivity for all manner of music devices.

Longer than the current model – the new Ibiza breasts the tape at 4.05 m, versus the existing car’s 3.97 m – it’s markedly more capacious, too, with improved rear seat legroom and a significantly larger and more practical boot space which, at 292 litres with rear seats in place, is comfortably the largest in the supermini class.

New BMW GINA Light Visionary Model Car Is One Sexy Shape-Shifter

The new BMW concept car is a shape-shifter? Hrmmm, this bears looking into. The new BMW GINA Light Visionary Model car is created using a flexible fabric that is rather stretched over a manipuable metal frame. So you can basically change the actual shape of your car based on what features you activate. More of like a classy Thing.

This is currently no word on if this beautiful machine will actually go into production, but my vote is a definite yes!

The ‘Gina’ BMW is a prize-winning concept car, but the idea of using a fabric covering for the bodywork is now said to have been copied from an Italian. This is the subject of the lawsuit initiated by fashion designer Giuseppe Bianco, owner of a number of young fashion labels, and filed with the Rome Public Prosecutor a few days ago. Public Prosecutor Marcello Monteleone is believed to be assessing the case presented by lawyer Carlo Cirillo, which contains allegations of counterfeiting under articles 473 and 474 of the penal code and under the provisions of the so-called ‘industrial property code’, as defined in the law of 10 February 2005, number 30, article 127. Specifically, according to the lawsuit, Bianco designed an exclusive procedure in 2005 by which any covering material, from leather to fabric to more technical materials, could be applied to the external body of cars and other motor vehicles, “making the covering impermeable and resistant to atmospheric agents”. After registration of the patent, exhibition at the 2006 Bologna Motor show, and coverage on the Tg5 Italian TV channel, Bianco was confident, happy in the knowledge that he had invented something innovative. Then, in the middle of 2008 he discovered that BMW had presented a concept car with a fabric body: the Gina, acronym for ‘Geometry and functions in ‘n’ adaptions’. So Bianco felt that there was nothing for it but to assert his rights. The battle between this small inventor from Italy and the German colossus began last August, when lawyer Carlo Cirillo informed the legal offices of BMW that his client was the “owner of the rights following the filing of a formal application to register the patent for a fabric covering for motor vehicles” and warning the German company to “cease any activity in conflict with this”. After further contacts between lawyer Carlo Cirillo and the legal consultants from BMW’s patents office, and despite all the documentation presented in support of Bianco’s case, the Gina was exhibited at the museum in Munich and from 11 to 15 February of last year at the Salon Concept Car Hotel National des Invalides Plauce Vebaun, in Paris. As reported in the newspapers, at that event in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, the Gina won the award of ‘Grand prix du plus beau concept car de l’annèe 2008′. But Bianco was not willing to let matters lie. He made a video with his accusations and posted it on Youtube. The process involved in this work on the car and the application of the materials, as shown on the carbodydesign website, source BMW press office, is exactly the same as the one he designed. In his lawsuit, the designer also refers to a visit by a BMW manager to his stand at the Motorshow. Lawyers Carlo Cirillo and Pamela Baglivo, who presented his case with the collaboration of lawyer Micol Cupo Pagano, explain: “Our client hopes that this will throw light on the matter.” Lawyer Carlo Cirillo adds: “It is clear that if the judicial authorities recognize this as a violation of Mr. Bianco’s patent rights, we are looking at damage on a huge scale, taking into consideration the enormous publicity potential of the internet coverage used in handling this issue. So I hope that this will bring protection to the offended party, the small businessman, against a multinational company with great economic resources.”

green-blog.otesla-unveils-their-new-model-s-electric-car

the electric car startup company, recently unveiled their new Model S car in Los Angeles. The electric prototype car will cost $49,900, after a $7,500 tax credit and will be available for purchase in late 2011.

“Model S doesn’t compromise on performance, efficiency or utility — it’s truly the only car you need,”, . “Tesla is relentlessly driving down the cost of electric vehicle technology, and this is just the first of many mainstream cars we’re developing.”

The Tesla Model S will have a range of 300 miles with the possibility to buy less expensive batteries that will give you a range of 230 or 160 miles. The charging time is expected to take 4 hours, or 45 minutes by using a “quickcharge”. The car will do 0-60 mph in less than six seconds (5.6 seconds), a sport version of the car is promised to achieve 0-60 mph “well below five seconds”.

“Model S costs half as much as a Roadster, and it’s a better value than much cheaper cars,” Musk said. “The ownership cost of Model S, if you were to lease and then account for the much lower cost of electricity vs. gasoline at a likely future cost of $4 per gallon, is similar to a gasoline car with a sticker price of about $35,000. I’m positive this car will be the preferred choice of savvy consumers.”

The car will also have access to internet via 3G and be equipped with a 17-inch LCD screen in the center console. You will also be notified by SMS when the Model S has fully charged its batteries.
